About Dr. Irungu Kang'ata
Dr. Irungu Kang’ata is a Kenyan lawyer, politician, and the current Governor of Murang’a County, having been elected to the position in 2022. He previously served as the Senator for Murang’a County from 2017 to 2022 and as the Member of Parliament for Kiharu Constituency from 2013 to 2017.
Born in 1980 in Murang’a, Kang’ata studied law at the University of Nairobi, where he later earned a Master of Laws and a PhD in Law. He also trained at the Kenya School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 2007.
His political journey began in student leadership at the University of Nairobi before he was elected a councillor in Murang’a in 2002. Over the years, he has risen through local government, Parliament, the Senate and county leadership, and is particularly associated with reforms in healthcare, agriculture, education and digitisation of public services in Murang’a County.
